Warrior's Walk
At Fort Stewart, Georgia, along each side of Cottrell Field, you will find Eastern Redbud Trees planted in honor & memory of a soldier who made the ultimate sacrifice. Near the base of each tree, a marker bears the name of these heroes. It is called Warrior's Walk and it is sacred ground. A place where anyone can go and give thanks, pray, cry, leave mementos or have a moment of silence.
As you walk along Warrior's Walk, you get a feeling that is hard to describe, but you know you are walking among the names of great Americans. Men & women who gave it all, and you realize how much we take for granted, like reaching out and touching those we love. As you watch the many flags flying in the breeze, see the personal mementos left there and watch as a soldier kneels at the tree of a friend, a brother or sister that fought side by side with them, you can't help but be flushed with such mixed emotions of grief, sadness, pride, love and most of all thankfulness. You find yourself talking to soldiers you don't know, praying that your message is carried to them on the wind..."Thank You, because of you, my freedom stays intact, because of you"...and then the tears begin to fall and you can almost feel a finger reach out and catch a tear as if to say, "You are welcome my friend."
Walking along Warrior's Walk at night, you hear the bells & chimes ringing and then you stop as you hear TAPS being played, and again, you have those mixed emotions that make your heart swell as you stand there quietly at attention. When your life needs perspective, you can find it at Warrior's Walk, a sacred, hallowed ground. If ever I think,
What a hard life I lead,
My heart finds perspective,
Among those trees.
